12 STEPS TO GET A JOB IN GHANA – VOL. 4
Today, we shall be looking at the step 4 or vol. 4 of 12 steps to get a job in Ghana. It is of a truism that jobs are scarce and the little job openings available too demands competitive interview. This is worsened by the axiom, ‘Whom You Know’ to play a great role in landing yourself on a good job. I believe with much conscious efforts, one can scale over all these hurdles in the difficult economic situation to secure a good job.
Step 4: The Power of Appearance.
There are some customer based companies that hire employees based on their appearance. Your appearance is very important and powerful. It can get you that deal or close it forever. When going for interview, you do not have to wear just anything you lay your hands on. Take note of these few tips to assist you in your endeavours.
The Power of Appearance Tips
- Dress as a Prospect and not a Suspect.
Hello! You are going to be interviewed as a prospective employee so appear as such and not a suspect. Do not dress and be perceived or suspected to be a criminal. The way you dress and carry yourself about is the way people will address you. There have been several times that interviewers may give you a nickname based on the way job applicants dress.
If you are to be interviewed for the position of a secretary then dress smartly as a professional secretary. See yourself in that position and behave as such before you can be employed to occupy such positions. Same goes to an applicant to be interviewed for a managerial position. Dress as a manager and do not appear before the panel like a clerk officer.
Create the right perceptions in the minds of people about your prospects in life and the various prospective ideas you will bring on board when offered the opportunity. Bear in mind that, employers will never employ any applicant that will be looked down upon by customers and fellow employees all because they do not carry themselves well to fit into the position they are employed to execute.
2. Do not overdress and over makeup
It is not just a matter of dressing to impress; you must ask yourself and if possible, inquire to know the dress code for such interviews. For instance, there are some job interviews that demand a casual wear since the work demands that you should always appear casual. It is likely that you will be the odd one out to attend an interview where all applicants appear casual and you will appear in suit.
Ladies, too much makeup makes you look funny, disgusting and look like a caricature. A light or no makeup is simply okay. Do not overdo it and give yourself away to be disqualified or mocked.
3. If possible, wear company colours
Branding and corporate image is of paramount concern to every employer. Every company is identified by a particular mix of colours which spell out their core values serving as the driving force to achieve the organizational goals. If possible, wear the company’s colours to the interview to at least create some impressions. Do not bother yourself if you do not have any decent dress to match the company’s colours.
You should not be bothered much if you do not know the colours of the company; just appear in a neatly ironed shirt. Sometimes, the companies may specify the dress code in the job advertisement and this is very important to be strictly adhered to. It creates the first impressions that you buy into their values and you are ready to abide by all rules and regulations as well as the corporate values of the company.
4. Be modest without exposing yourself
Hello ladies, you are not to be interviewed for the roles of a porn star neither are you to be interviewed for the role of a hot model. Please do not dress provocatively as a tool to attract interviewers to offer you a job. Dressing to expose your thighs, cleavage and other sensitive parts automatically disqualifies you where the company’s values frown on indecent and immoral activities.
Young man, same applies to you. Dress decently without exposing any part of your body. That will be very disgusting and embarrassing.
5. Guys, Avoid These Things
When it comes to hiring employees, some employers are very critical, read different meanings into anything and consider several factors. Under no circumstance should any serious job applicant (guys) appear in any of the under listed items
- Heavy neck chains with occult symbols,
- Huge rings,
- Horrible tattoos on any exposed part
- Other disgusting items.
You create the impression of being a rascal, bad boy, a criminal and any other suspect if you are found with any of these. These are not official and may not be accepted in formal work environments.
6. Ladies, Avoid These
I do not see the reason why ladies will go to the extent of doing any of the under mentioned items.
- Unnecessary and annoying way of chewing gum
- Wearing beads or chains on your legs.
- Wearing long nails – this is not a fashion show
- Wearing a rather too long hair – you aren’t a mermaid. Are you?
- Exposing too much of the boobs and cleavage
- Wearing extremely short skirt
- Do not wear rather too high heeled shoes – be modest
7. Hair should be well kempt.
Once again, you must make sure that you look good, feel good and smell good. Your hair should be properly cut, shaved and well-trimmed. Leaving your hair very bushy, unkempt and without brushing it gives a negative impression about you. Your appearance including your hair adds to the corporate image of the company or tarnishes it so be circumspect about your first appearance and impressions.
8. Do not Wear high scented perfumes
For some reasons, do not wear high scented perfumes to interviews. This may aggravate the conditions of any of the panel members who might be asthmatic. The situation becomes very unfortunate where the scent of the perfume remains in the air-conditioned room to the discomfort the panel members.
On a more serious note, it will be disastrous and very suicidal on your chances of getting the appointment if you enter the interview room with an awful body odour. It is very disgusting to do this. In case of any body odour, make sure you treat it before attending to the interview and at least, avoid the use of high scented perfumes to hide it.
